What Is a CSCS Card?

The CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) card proves that you have the right training and qualifications for the construction work you do. Almost every construction site in the UK requires workers to hold a valid CSCS card before they can enter. It's essentially your passport to construction work. Without one, you'll struggle to find site-based employment.

Types of CSCS Cards

Green Card (Labourer): For general construction operatives. The most common starting point. Blue Card (Skilled Worker): For workers with an NVQ Level 2 in their trade. Gold Card (Advanced Craft/Supervisor): For NVQ Level 3 holders or supervisory roles. Black Card (Manager): For construction managers with NVQ Level 6 or 7. White Card (Professionally Qualified): For architects, engineers, and other professionals. Red Card (Trainee/Apprentice): For workers currently undertaking qualifications.

How to Get a Green CSCS Card

Step 1: Book and pass the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test (cost: about £22.50). The test is 50 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes. Step 2: Apply for your CSCS card online at cscs.uk.com or by calling 0344 994 4777. Cost: about £36 for the card. Step 3: Your card will arrive by post within 10 working days. Total cost: approximately £58.50. The Green Card is valid for 5 years.

CITB Test Preparation Tips

Download the official CITB app for practice tests. Study the CITB revision materials (available online for free). Focus on these key topics: working at height, manual handling, hazardous substances (COSHH), fire safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), first aid basics, and electrical safety. Most people pass first time with 1-2 weeks of revision. If you fail, you can rebook after 2 days.
