What Is an SIA Licence?
The SIA (Security Industry Authority) licence is a legal requirement for anyone working in the private security industry in the UK. You cannot work as a door supervisor, security guard, or CCTV operator without a valid SIA licence. There are two main licence types: Door Supervisor (DS) — for working at licensed venues, events, and retail. Security Guard (SG) — for static guarding, mobile patrols, and corporate security.
How to Get Licensed
Step 1: Complete an approved SIA training course. Door Supervisor: 4-6 days, covering conflict management, physical intervention, and licensing law. Security Guard: 3-4 days, covering surveillance, access control, and emergency procedures. Step 2: Apply for your SIA licence online at sia.homeoffice.gov.uk. Cost: approximately £220 for a 3-year licence. Step 3: Receive your licence (typically takes 6-8 weeks to process). Total investment: £600-£1,000 including training and licence fee.
What Security Work Pays
Security guard rates: £14.00-£17/hr for day shifts, £13-£16/hr for nights. Door supervisor rates: £14.50-£19/hr, with weekend night shifts paying the most. Event security: £14-£17/hr (festivals, concerts, sports events). Close protection (bodyguard): £15-£25/hr+ (requires additional training). Corporate security/reception: £14.50-£18/hr with regular weekday hours.
